Get to the Brook: Hope and Health

Jun 18, 2026    Pastor Joe Shakour

This sermon, based on Psalm 42, presents a biblical "how-to" for overcoming depression and anxiety. We see Psalm 42 identified as a Maschil, a teaching psalm intended to provide understanding of human experience. The core message is that when the soul is "cast down" (depressed) or "disquieted" (anxious), the believer must "get to the brook"—a metaphor for seeking the presence and promises of God. This process involves a deliberate shift: using the mind to hope in God and the mouth to praise Him. Drawing on the illustration of a "hart" (a male deer), the preacher explains that just as a wounded deer instinctively runs to a brook for healing and to hide its scent from enemies, a hurting person must run to the "Living Water" of Jesus to find spiritual and emotional health.
